From shared ideas to a clear product roadmap

Team planning a digital product with sticky notes

Agree on the problem

A product roadmap starts with a user need. Describe what someone is trying to do, where they struggle and what a successful outcome looks like. Shared answers give the team a practical basis for decisions.

Define a focused first release

Compare ideas by user value, effort and dependencies. Include the capabilities needed to complete the core task in your first release. Keep other proposals in a backlog for later review.

Plan around learning

Set clear outcomes for research, prototyping, development and launch. Record the question each stage should answer and who owns it. Testing a prototype can expose weak assumptions before expensive implementation decisions.

Update the plan after launch

Review feedback and observe whether people complete the key tasks. Use that evidence to choose the next problem to solve. A useful roadmap changes as the team learns.
